Details of ‘The Good Wife’ Spinoff are Being Released

Though February is less than six months away, CBS is starting to drop some hints about what the spinoff to The Good Wife is going to be like. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a young lawyer will be tricked into a financial scam that ruins her reputation and also wipes out Diane Lockhart’s (Christine Baranski) savings.

Because Diane has been forced out of Lockhart & Lee, she joins Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) at an emerging Chicago law firm to try and rebuild her life.

Fan favorite character Marissa Gold (Sarah Steele), who has been a recurring character since the second season of the show, will also be returning to the show, this time in a series regular role. This time around, Marissa will be Diane’s secretary but will take on more of an investigative role as the season goes on.

Meanwhile, the first episode of the spinoff, which still doesn’t have a title, will air its first episode on CBS before moving to CBS All Access, where the rest of the episodes will be available to stream.

Behind the scenes, Robert and Michelle King, the creators of The Good Wife, will be returning to the show as showrunners, executive producers and will write the show, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Originally, the Kings were planning to take a backseat on the project so they could focus on their summer show, BrainDead, which also aired on CBS. However, the first season was marked by low ratings and even was moved around on the schedule. It’s also unlikely that the show will be renewed as star Mary Elizabeth Winstead has recently been cast in the upcoming season of FX’s Fargo.

The spinoff will take place a year after the events of the finale, which featured Diane slapping Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) after Alicia put someone on the stand who said she’d had an affair with Kurt McVeigh (Gary Cole), who is Diane’s husband.

Rumors started flowing about the spinoff just after the finale of The Good Wife aired, with Baranski joining in talks to star in the potential spinoff. The spinoff was announced two weeks after the finale aired, with the announcement that Baranski and Jumbo would be reprising their roles.

When the first episode of the spinoff airs on CBS, the officially title of the show will be released. The first episode will air at some point in February as a specific date has yet to be announced.
