Despite Coronavrius Setbacks, ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Filming Nears Completion

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the first of Disney+’s lineup of original shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is close to being completed, Screen Rant has reported. While production had stopped in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, star Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), who plays the titular superhero The Falcon, has clarified that most of filming was finished before the shutdown.

Mackie recently made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, in which he clarified the position the series’ production was in prior to the set back: “I’m happy to say we are not cancelled. We are on hold. We’re going back hopefully sometime soon and finish it up, we have very little stuff to do. I’m very happy with it. We have a little more to go back to do. But everybody rest assured, it will come out.”

While the series is not in jeopardy, the duration of the delay is still up in the air. The series was filming in Prague back in March when the series was put on hold. While restrictions have been lifted in Prague, allowing for film and TV production to resume, the team behind The Falcon and the Winter Soldier does not know when they will go back to work. In addition to the necessary filming yet to finish, no word was given in regards to how much work was done on VFX.

Following the release of a Super Bowl ad in February, Disney+ had set the release date for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in August of 2020. At the time of publication, Disney has not announced a change in release date for the show. Given the length of the production set back, it seems a delay in release date is inevitable. However, with the recent announcement that fellow Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe-set show WandaVision would resume production in July, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may resume production shortly as well.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes place following the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which Captain America, played by Chris Evans (Knives Out), retired and relinquished his shield to The Falcon. The series will follow The Falcon as he attempts to live up to the legacy and joins forces with enemy-turned-ally Winter Soldier (played by Sebastain Stan (I, Tonya) in stopping the returning villain Baron Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl (Good-bye, Lenin!).

The films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are available to stream on Disney+.
