Denzel Washington Will Narrate PBS Documentary ‘The March’

PBS has announced their new civil rights movement documentary The March will be narrated by actor Denzel Washington, reported Deadline.

The March will tell stories behind the pivotal 1963 March on Washington moment in civil rights history. PBS held a Q&A about the documentary, where Roger Mudd made an appearance. Mudd was the anchor for CBS’s live coverage during the March on Washington.

The March on Washington was where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his infamous “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Mudd commented on the broadcast of this moment at PBS’ Q&A, saying, “I am convinced that, aside from the content of what he said, the sheer impact — people were taken aback by the extraordinary power of who he was… When you have a significant amount of broadcast time, in all of the major markets, with his speech, and the background of those more than 250,000 [marchers] — it was a game changer.”

On how the March of Washington made such an impact on the civil rights movement, Mudd added, “a signal to the nation, particularly to the center of power that… it was no longer a regional movement but a national movement.”
