Disney+ has announced that its new Obi-Wan series for the upcoming subscription streaming platform will be directed by none other than Deborah Chow. Chow has previously worked on shows within the Star Wars universe, making her an ideal choice for the new show.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy commented that Chow was the best fit for the role of director on this series. “We really wanted to select director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the Star Wars saga,” Kennedy said. “Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in The Mandalorian, I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”
However, Chow’s past work extends far beyond just that of The Mandalorian. She has worked as a director on many other prominent series, including Better Call Saul, Mr. Robot, and Jessica Jones, all of which have been nominated for at least one Primetime Emmy Award. Additional credits for Chow include American Gods, Snowfall, The Man in the High Castle, Fear the Walking Dead, and The Vampire Diaries. This wide range of directing credits from Chow illustrates the experience that Kennedy said the new Obi-Wan series was looking for.
In addition to directing, Chow will also serve as an executive producer for the series alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Ewan McGregor, who will be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequels. Additional producers for the series include series writer Hossein Amini (The Alienist, Drive), Tracey Seaward (The Queen), and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).
The new Obi-Wan series does not yet have an announced title or official release date. The Mandalorian will be available as the debut series on Disney+ once the platform goes live November 12th. You can watch the official trailer for The Mandalorian here.
