The latest novel from author Dean Koontz (Odd Thomas, The Eyes of Darkness) is headed to the small screen. Deadline reports Koontz’s Devoted is being adapted as a television series by Tomorrow Studios, the production team behind TNT’s Snowpiercer. The team is a joint venture of Marty Adelstein (Hanna, Made of Honor) and ITV Studios.
According to Deadline, the novel follows a mute eleven-year-old named Woody Bookman, who believes the same evil that murdered his father, now seeks to kill him and his mother. The only hope in protecting the mother and son is a special canine named Kipp, who can mysteriously communicate with Woody. Kipp must protect Woody before the predator can find him. Koontz will serve as executive producer along with Adelstein and Tomorrow Studios President, Becky Clements.
“The characters in Devoted are close to my heart, and it would be a career capper to see them brought to the screen,” said Koontz, via Deadline. Devoted is just the latest in string of works by Koontz that have received the live-action treatment. According to Deadline, The Face of Fear was adapted as a TV film for CBS in 1990 and starred Lee Horsely (Matt Houston, Hawkeye) and Pam Dawber (Mork and Mindy, My Sister Sam). Eight years later, ABC aired his 1993 novel, Mr. Murder, as a miniseries starring Stephen Baldwin (Born on the Fourth of July, Posse) and James Coburn (Affliction, Monsters, Inc.) And in 2016, his Dark Rivers of the Heart was adapted by Gloria Reuben (Cloak & Dagger, ER) along with Cathy Konrad (Walk the Line, Kate & Leopold) and Ashok Armitraj (Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengence, Bringing Down Tha House).
“Dean is an incredible force and his acumen for writing suspenseful thrillers with heartfelt characters and story makes him uber successful globally,” said Adelstein via Deadline. “We are honored to have him entrust us with the adaptation of his story and for Devoted to be the latest book rights that we’ve secured for Tomorrow Studios,” Adelstein added via Deadline.
