Peacock announced on January 27th that the adaptation of Dead Day will not air on its streaming platform. This show was formulated by the same minds that created the Vampire Diaries, Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and Kevin Williamson (Scream, Tell Me a Story) via. Variety.
Dead Day was supposed to show the trials and conflicts of characters when the dead come back and cause chaos for one day of the year. This TV adaptation is based off of Aftershock Comics Dead Day Series created by Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Star Trek) and Evgeniy Bornyakov (You Are Obsolete, Descendant). This adaptation was ordered by Peacock last year in the Spring of 2022 with Plec and Williamson as executive producers, writers, and co-showrunners for this series. Parrot was going to be consulting producer.
This is not the only show from Plec that had been axed recently because just last week Peacock also decided to cancel Vampire Academy via. Deadline. After one season, the show brought in $15 Million in the box office in over 100 different territories. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for the studio to justify making a second season for it did not see the show finding a large audience compared with the platform’s other hits like Yellowstone, Dr. Death, and Best Man.
Both shows as well as One of Us Is Lying will not move forward with anymore releases on Peacock. According to Deadline, the platform is re-examining its strategy to compete with other large streaming services, and has included focusing more on drama, comedy, and limited true crime series. All of these are efforts to have audience retention accumulate and stay on the platform. As for Dead Days, Universal Television is seeking another distributor after the announcement was made yesterday.
