It has been announced that the new DC Drama Dead Boy Detectives is changing streaming platforms. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show has been sold by HBO Max to Netflix. The series is based on Matt Wagner’s (Batman and the Monster Men, Doctor Mid-Nite) and Neil Gaiman’s (Coraline, 1602) comic book.
Warner Bros. Television, the producers of the show, decided to sell the TV show because, sources via The Hollywood Reporter, said that Dead Boy Detectives didn’t work well with the new content being developed by the new DC executives James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) and Peter Safran (Flatliners, Aquaman). Gunn and Safran are currently working on rebooting the whole of DC Universe and have mapped out the first chapter for the new content. Among the latest content, they are developing five interconnected shows that will fit with Peacemaker, a TV show Gunn created on HBO Max.
Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant, Supernatural) adapted the story from the comic books. Beth Schwartz (Arrow, Sweet Tooth) will serve as showrunner alongside Yockey for the Warners and Berlanti Production.
Dead Boy Detectives was described as a “fresh take on ghost stories mixed with a vintage detective series” by cast member Kassius Nelson (Pirates, Last Night in Soho). The show will follow dead British teenagers Edwin Payne, played by newcomer George Rexstrew, and Charles Rowland, played by Jayden Revri (The Lodge, Fate: The Winx Saga). The show will focus on exploring loss, grief, and death through the relationship between the two dead teenagers and their surviving friend Crystal Palace, played by Nelson. Other cast members include Briana Cuoco (Harley Quinn, The Flight Attendant) playing Jenny Green; Ruth Connell (Supernatural, The Cursed Man) reprising her role as Night Nurse from Doom Patrol; Yuyu Kitamura (Expats) as Niko, and Jenn Lyon (Claws, Justified) playing Esther.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is being executive produced by Yockey, Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, Doom Patrol), Schwartz, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (You, The Flash), and the banner’s head of TV Leigh London Redman (More). The pilot was directed by Lee Toland Krieger (Shadow and Bone, Riverdale).
Dead Boy Detectives is just the latest DC drama to be impacted by Gunn and Safran’s reboot of the DC Universe. Since their arrival, HBO Max has canceled three DC shows Titans, Doom Patrol, and Pennyworth. Harley Quinn and Peacemaker are the only shows that remain on HBO Max and will continue under Gunn and Safran.
Netflix has not released a premiere date for their newly acquired show Dead Boy Detectives. All other DC TV shows are available to stream on HBO Max.
