DC Studios Co-Head Dispels Rumors of ‘Green Lantern’ Show Scrapped

James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, has denied reports that HBO Max’s Green Lantern series has been cancelled, as reported by Comicbook. The show has been in development since 2019, with Arrow producer Greg Berlanti at the helm.

The Green Lantern series was originally set to center on Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, with Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) in the lead roles. However, in October 2021 it was reported that the focus of the series had shifted to John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes and a longstanding Green Lantern.

Gunn, who took on the role of DC Studios co-head alongside Peter Safran (The Suicide Squad) in 2022, took to social media to clarify that the Green Lantern series was not cancelled, calling the rumors “fake.” The show was first announced in 2019 alongside Strange Adventures, which was later confirmed not to be moving forward at HBO Max.

The Warner Bros. Discovery merger has brought about significant changes at HBO Max and DC in 2022, as Gunn and Safran plan new era for the DC Universe. As stated by Deadline, Berlanti previously described the Green Lantern series as an “anthology of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist” and promised that it would be the “biggest DC show ever made.” He also revealed that the show would feature a trip to space, which has fans of the iconic superhero excited to see what the series has in store.

It is currently unclear when the Green Lantern series will premiere on HBO Max, but fans can rest assured that it is still in development and not cancelled, according to Gunn’s recent statement. With an all-star cast and a focus on one of DC’s most beloved characters, the Green Lantern series is sure to be a hit when it finally debuts on the streaming platform.
