Roughly one year ago, Netflix unleashed its refreshingly retro sci-fi series Stranger Things and thrilled audiences. These days it feels wrong to move through the summer months without touching base with our favorite characters and their larger-than-life mysteries in Hawkins, Indiana. So far, there has been a slow trickle of details concerning Season 2, whose premiere has been pushed back to the fall. Netflix has been keeping the particulars of the plot mostly under wraps, releasing little promotional material. So far, the only footage we have for Season 2 is the infamous teaser trailer that premiered during the Super Bowl.
Those desperate for some new info are in luck, however: Cinemablend reported that David Harbour, who plays Police Chief Jim Hopper on the show, recently spilled some fresh details about the upcoming season. According to Harbour, fans can expect Hopper to take bit of a darker turn come Season 2. In a lengthy interview, Harbour unveiled that, “There’s a bit of a cover-up kind of going on that Hopper is head of. We don’t need people to know about the interdimensional monster that was running around town.”
Season 1 ended with Hopper entering a mysterious black car, a scene that has been the hotbed of debate for show fans since last year, as the show gave little to no indication as to what it meant for Hopper. This information revealed by Harbour might point to the fact that Hopper was pushed by some force (government agency or otherwise) to cover up the strange goings-on in Hawkins.
Harbour also hints that Eleven – wherever she went at the end of Season 1 – will return to our plane of reality in the next season. The actor details, “[Hopper’s] got this reemergence of Eleven, which he knows something about at the end of last season. There is some interaction on that front, in terms of his relationship with Eleven, and we see what that becomes in season two, which is very complex. Hopper is sort of pulled in a lot of different directions.” Even those who have called for justice for the fan-favorite side character Barb will have their questions answered with Season 2. “He’s also got the Barb thing,” Harbour said of his character. “Barb was never found, so that’s addressed.”
Harbour has been the self-professed leak of many details about Season 2, and ended the interview by joking how much he had revealed: “I really have to be careful. I am going to get fired or something.” Besides playing Jim Hopper on the Netflix series, Harbour has some big projects in his future, the biggest being his role as Hellboy in the upcoming reboot of the Guillermo del Toro franchise – an opportunity he credits to Stranger Things.
All episodes of Stranger Things Season 1 are available on Netflix. Season 2 will premiere on the streaming service later this year on October 31.
