Not many have heard about Disney’s newest princess from Avalor. According to Variety, Disney recently set a date for Elena of Avalor, Disney’s first Latina princess.
The series will show Elena, an animated teenage character who will do whatever it takes to save her kingdom from an evil sorceress. But at the same time, she’ll have to learn how to rule as a queen once she is old enough. Disney hopes that many fans will emerge after watching the series and follow Elena’s adventures. The upcoming series is expected to incorporate influences from Latinx cultures through music, food, traditions, architecture, and customs.
In the fall, Disney Channel will air a special TV movie called Elena and the Secret of Avalor, which will explain how Elena was imprisoned for decades in an enchanted amulet. The theme song for the show is performed by Gaby Moreno, a Latin Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist. And Elena’s anthem My Time, is performed by Aimee Carrero, who will also voice the main character.

The series was created by Craig Gerber, who will also serve as executive producer. Silvia Cardenas Olivas is the story editor, and Elliot M. Bour is the supervising director. Serving as cultural advisers are Marcela Davison Avilés, founder of The Chapultepec Group, co-founder of the international Latino arts initiative Camino Arts, and Director of Humanities Programs at the FDR Foundation at Harvard University; and Diane Rodriguez, Associate Artistic Director of Centre Theatre Group and co-founder of the theater ensemble Latins Anonymous, who was appointed by President Obama to be a member of the National Council on the Arts.
Along with Carrero, the series features voices from Constance Marie, Lou Diamond Phillips, Danny Trejo, Ivonne Coll, Jenna Ortega, Chris Parnell, Yvette Nicole Brown, Carlos Alazraqui, Emiliano Diez, Julia Vera, Christan Lanz, Jilian Rose Reed, Joseph Haro, Jorge Diaz, Keith Ferguson, and Joe Nunez.
Elena of Avalor will debut on Friday, July 22 at 7 p.m. on the Disney channel.
