After running for almost 17 seasons, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has returned for its 18th premiere. Based on Entertainment Weekly, Danny DeVito looks back on his time on the show and talks about the new season starting in a chaotic stun.
DeVito comes back to play Frank with his co-stars Rob Mac (Mythic Quest, Fargo) as Mac, Charlie Day (The Lego Movie, Horrible Bosses) as Charlie, Glenn Howerton (A.P. Bio, The Mindy Project) as Dennis, and Kaitlin Olson (High Potential, The Mick) as Dee. In the start of the series, it was low-rated and the creators found that the show might be better with stars coming in on special episodes. DeVito was introduced in the second season bringing ratings up. Over the years, they’ve had other celebrities guest star in the show, including Bryan Cranston, Guillermo del Toro, Seann William Scott, and Jason Sudeikis. In the last season, DeVito’s Emmy-winning Taxi co-star Carol Kane played a guest on the show as Sam, Frank’s love interest on The Golden Bachelor.
The 17th season ended with the two characters getting married. However, the season 18 premiere has Sam die in her sleep. While the rest of the main cast try to make sure this wedding happens, Frank is having troubles of his own. Chaos unfolds at the bar as Sam’s body decomposes and every guest at the ceremony freaks out. DeVito tells Entertainment Weekly in an interview that the writers outdid themselves with this episode and all the anticipation building up from the wackiness that followed was incredible.
He says: “I mean I couldn’t wait for the… let’s say, expulsion of Carol Kane. Frank marries a corpse! It’s just so cool.”
Then: “A corpse bride, c’mon, that was tame! And I was having mobility problems, needed the strings tied to my legs, doing the Frankenstein walk. The scene between the girls was good, and Kaitlin is always great. From the beginning, I thought that, out of all of us, she was the one that had the comic timing.”
DeVito is impressed with all the work he has done since 2006. All the crazy and insane things the characters would go through in each season are beyond believable for just starting out as a rundown pub in South Philadelphia.
