Danish Actor Claes Bang Stars as Count Dracula in New Netflix Series

Danish actor Claes Bang (The Square) is set to star in Netflix’s upcoming limited series Dracula, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The series is a new take on Bram Stoker’s novel and begins in Transylvania, where the “blood-thirsty” Count is plotting against Victorian London.

Showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat (Sherlock) serve as writers of the series. Damon Thomas (Killing Eve) Jonny Campbell (Westworld), and Paul McGuigan (Sherlock) will serve as directors. Gatiss, Moffat and Sue Vertue (Hartswood Films) serve as executive producers together with Ben Irving for the BBC and Carolyn Newman and Larry Tanz for Netflix.

The cast also includes Joanna Scanlan, John Heffernan, Dolly Wells, Sacha Dhawan, Jonathan Aris, Morfydd Clark, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Matthew Beard (An Education), Lyndsey Marshal (The League of Gentlemen), Chanel Cresswell (This Is England), Lydia West (Years & Years), Sofia Oxenham (Poldark), Paul Brennen (Happy Valley), Sarah Niles (Catastrophe), John McCrea (God’s Own Country), Phil Dunster (Humans) and Millicent Wong.

“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock. I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realise that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character,” Bang said.

“It was one of those moments – who else could it be than Claes! He has it all. Brilliant, gorgeous, charismatic, lethal. Tall, dark and gruesome all at once. Hell has a new boss,” Hartswood and the writers said.

“Hell has a new boss… and BBC One has an outstanding new leading man. To say we have lucked out with Claes would be to underestimate the supreme talents of Steven, Mark and the team at Hartswood and their knack for choosing the right actor to redefine an iconic role. Seriously exciting stuff…” controller of BBC drama, Piers Wenger, said.

“Claes will bring Dracula to life with chilling charm and evil elegance. With his talents and Steven and Mark’s brilliant storytelling, Netflix members around the world will love to fear this dark and complex anti-hero,” vice president of content acquisition for Netflix, Larry Tanz, said.

The series is commissioned by BBC One and is being produced in the U.K. by Hartswood Films as a co-production between Netflix and BBC One. Filming is underway.

The show will premiere on BBC in the U.K. and on Netflix outside of the U.K.
