On Saturday, May 30, during the 30th anniversary of the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), during a retrospective panel titled “The Final Game: Inside the Legacy of All American,” hosted by Werner Bros. Television Group, fans and castmates alike were left stunned as British actor Daniel Ezra (The Running Man, Blood Cells) stepped onto the stage. This caught everyone off guard as showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll (Found, Rosewood) seemed to keep the secret from the likes of Bre-Z (Empire, 16 bars), Greta Onieogou (Fever Pitch, Undercover Grandma), Michael Evans Behling (Grey’s Anatomy, Vipers), Kareem Grimes (S.W.A.T., Jarhead), as well as fan-favorite Taye Diggs (Chicago, Rent) and the rest of the panel, and the world for that matter.
As captured in a viral reel by entertainment creator Agnez Henderson (@kissmyaggie), midway through the session, Carroll revealed that she had one last trick up her sleeve. Right as fans were feeling the weight of Ezra’s missing presence, the actor emerged. The energy in the room was electric, and the surprise began spreading across social media. The cast enjoyed a very warm reunion, which resonated deeply with the crowd.
The surprise guest appearance really seemed to speak to the huge impact the show made on Black television for over a decade. The storylines being highly authentic and multi-generational with the relationships shining through on the set because they really have this deep connection to each other in real life. The plot of the show may have been fictional, but the real bond between the cast members seems to be the legacy of the show.
The moment was bittersweet as it came on the closing of the beloved show. Onieogou admitted to reporters that she spent the entire time crying and that she “really thinks there is a lot of pride in what we accomplished.”
