CW Renews ‘The Originals’ for Fifth Season & ‘iZombie’ for Fourth Season

According to a report by Variety, the CW has officially renewed The Originals for a fifth and iZombie for a fourth season. CW now has renewed 11 series total, excluding their newest series Frequency and No Tomorrow, which were not picked up for a second season, as well as Vampire Diaries and Reign, which both ended this season.

Set in New Orleans, The Originals follows Vampire Diaries’ Klaus Mikaelson and his vampire family, including Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic), Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Elijh (Daniel Gillies). The current season has been focused on Klaus and Hayley’s relationship with their daughter Hope, as well as an army of unsired vampires who want the life of vampire hybrid Klaus.  According to creator the lead character Klaus, was supposed to be killed of in the original series Vampire Diaries, but because of his popularity, continued on the series and gained the spin-off series. The Originals was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Hairstyling. The final episode of the current fourth season is set to premiere on Friday May 19, 2017.

iZombie is based on the DC comics, is set in Seattle, Washington, and follows medical resident Olivia ‘Liv’ Moore (Rose McIver), as she utilizes her qualities as a zombie for good. The series also stars Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohl, Robert Buckley, and David Anders. In the current season, Liv has discovered there are more zombies living in Seattle than she had previously believed. There is in fact an entire zombie army, that is being employed by a private military contractor, and that army is preparing for the day that humans learn of their existence, when they will retaliate. Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) developed the series with Diane Ruggiero.  The final episode of the current third season is set to premiere on Tuesday May 16, 2017.

These CW series join the already renewed series from January, including CW’s four DC comic shows, Arrow (Season 6), The Flash (Season 4), Legends of Tomorrow (Season 3) and Supergirl (Season 3) which switched over from CBS.  Supernatural, the longest running series is going into it’s 13th season, and the comedies Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Season 3) and Jane the Virgin (Season 4), the later of which has gotten actresses Rachel Bloom and Gina Rodriguez Golden Globe awards.
