CW Is Beginning Work on a Ruby Rose-Led “Batwoman” Pilot

It is official, the CW is adding to its high-rated and passionately followed multiverse of DC heroes and heroines with a Batwoman stand-alone series. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the network handed out a pilot order for the Ruby Rose-led drama on Thursday with show-runner and writer Caroline Dries and executive producer Greg Berlanti attached. David Nutter, a former Emmy-award winner for shows like Game of Thrones, is expected to serve in the same capacity for Batwoman again here.

The news comes mere weeks after Rose made her debut as the caped-crusader in the CW’s three-way DC Comics series crossover. The drama was highly-anticipated and widely expected to be pushed through development, and it would be yet another breakthrough for Greg Berlanti as an LGBTQ advocate as this would the be the first-ever superhero series to be led by a lesbian character who is also played by an openly gay actress in Ruby Rose.

In addition to writing and serving as show-runner, Dries is expected to executive produce alongside Berlanti. Nutter, whom Berlanti personally recruited to direct following his successes with previous DC related works, will also be credited as an executive producer.

The official description released by the CW for the series goes as follows: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane [Rose] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
