The upcoming ninth season of The Flash on CW will be the series’ last season, according to Deadline. It was announced that this season will premiere in 2023 with a short 13-episode count.
The cast members of The Flash signed off on their last appearances before the announcement. Grant Gustin (Glee), who plays star Barry Allen of The Flash, had agreed to a one-year deal in January, allowing him to appear in 15 episodes, according to Deadline. Along with Gustin, the other cast members, such as Candice Patton (Legends of Tomorrow), Danielle Panabaker (Sky High), and Jesse L. Martin (Rent), have all committed to star in episodes for The Flash’s ninth season.
After finishing season eight of The Flash, the series was one of the CW network’s most-watched shows, coming from a strong viewership of about 1.09 million viewers, according to Deadline. To continue the story that dedicated viewers tune in to watch will be the release of The Flash movie released by Warner Bros. The movie will premiere few weeks ahead of the series finale, which makes the movie an expedited way to wrap up the storyline, according to Deadline.
However, after The Flash’s ninth season wraps up, a significant contributor to the viewership of the CW network will be gone. The CW will now only have Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights to help the network viewers continue tuning into other series similar to The Flash.
The producer of The Flash, Eric Wallace (Teen Wolf) and Gustin, gave their regards to the series. Wallace praised the series for being able to “provide talented actors with a series to showcase their talents.” Gustin told Entertainment Tonight that he may never have a “job this cool again,” and that it was an experience he “will not take for granted,” according to Deadline.
The Flash’s cancellation marks the end of the original Arrowverse series at the CW as the network prepares to be sold to Nexstar. Season nine of The Flash will be released in 2023, and in the meantime, there will be promos of the series arising.
