La La Land won big at tonight’s Critics’ Choice Awards.
The Damien Chazelle written and directed musical won eight awards at tonight’s show for production design, cinematography, editing, score, best original song, best director, best original screenplay, and best picture. This big of a sweep for the Whiplash writer/director’s film gives it a good chance going into the Oscars, in which it faces stiff competition against Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By the Sea (which shared the original screenplay award with La La Land). The full list of Critics’ Choice film winners can be found here.
On the TV side, Louie Anderson followed up his Emmy win with another one for his role as Zach Galifianakis’ mother on FX’s Baskets, while Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, and Sterling K. Brown all once again picked up awards for their work on The People v. O.J. Simpson (which also took home best TV movie or limited series). HBO took home both the best drama and best comedy series awards with Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley both taking home the prize. New shows like HBO’s Westworld and FX’s Atlanta also got some love, with Thandie Newton (Westworld), Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), and Donald Glover (Atlanta) all winning awards.
The Critics’ Choice Awards aired on A&E and were hosted by Silicon Valley‘s TJ Miller. Miller’s typically oddball hosting shenanigans included a chorus line of topless men wearing oversized hats and having his head blown off by a canon. Miller’s hosting gig was just recently brought into question when, as Deadline reports, he was arrested Saturday following an altercation with an Uber driver.
