Creative Teams at Comic-Con at Home Unveil First Look of ‘Star Trek: Lower Deck’ and Announce New ‘Star Trek’ Shows

At Comic-Con at Home, the creative team for Star Trek: Lower Decks (created by Mike McMahan) has  unveiled the first look of its new animated series and creative teams at Nickelodeon and CBS have announced two new Star Trek animated series, per The Hollywood Reporter. Comic-Con at Home is broadcasted event in which all the panels who would normally be at San Diego Comic Con are available to be streamed live on IGN.com, IGN’s Facebook, IGN’s Twitter, and on IGN apps on many technology devices.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an adult animated series that will premiere on August 6th on CBS. The series, “focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi have to keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies” (CBS). Before releasing the first look, CBS released trailer for Lower Decks on July 12th. The series will both expand the Star Trek universe and offer a new and comedic take on the world. Nickelodeon has also announced the production and released the logo of Star Trek: Prodigy, children’s series. The project is set to debut in 2021 and is being developed by brothers Kevin Hageman (Trollhunters, The Lego Movie) and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, Tales of Arcadia). Prodigy will “follow a group of ‘lawless teens’ using a derelict Starfleet ship to search for adventure” (The Hollywood Reporter).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, yet another new Star Trek project that will appear on the small screen, was also announced by CBS during Comic-Con at Home. It will be a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery (created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman). Ethan Peck (In TimeThe Sorcerer’s Apprentice), Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, Femme Fatale), and Anson Mount (Crossroads, Safe) – who play Spock, Number One, and Captain Pike on Star Trek: Discovery, repsctively – will appear in the spinoff. Due to the cornavirus pandemic, it is unclear when Strange New Worlds will be released. Most likely, the show will premeire in 2022 or 2023 (Inverse).
