On Thursday, the live-action Cowboy Bebop series was canceled after one season on Netflix. The cancellation came three weeks after its premiere on November 19. Members of the Cowboy Bepop production team offered their thoughts on the recent news, via The Hollywood Reporter.
Executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxauch retweeted The Hollywood Reporter‘s story, mentioning his disappointment that the cast and crew won’t be back for a potential second season.
“I truly loved working on this,” he wrote on Twitter. “It came from a real and pure place of respect and affection. I wish we could make what we planned for a second season, but you know what they say, men pan, God laughs. See you, space cowboy.”
A viewer then asked Grillo-Marxauch to respond to the criticism of a line in the series where the writers tried to make wordplay surround “blackmail” and “Black male”. “I didn’t write it and while I understand why you are displeased with it,” he responded on Twitter, “how about not showing up on my mentions to admonish me when I just lost my job?”
Lead actor, John Cho (Harold & Kumar) went to Twitter and posted a GIF of Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods) saying “I’m OK” in a scene from Friends. Mason A. Park (Acting for a Cause) then replied, “Love you, friend,” under that same tweet.
Daniella Pineda (The Originals), who played Faye Valentine in the series, went to Instagram and posted a meme of two people holding broken beer glasses while toasting, looking like a toast went wrong. She did not caption the picture.
Cowboy Bebop was based on the original 1998 Japanese anime series and 2001 film. The Netflix live-action adaptation received a 46 percent approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
