A new animated series is joining the expansive DCU. Deadline reports a Mister Miracle series is in the works with comic writer Tom King serving as showrunner. The series will be the second animated project under new DCU co-leaders James Gunn (Superman, The Suicide Squad) and Peter Safran (Annabelle: Creation, Shazam! Fury of the Gods).
According to Deadline, the show was announced at the Annecy Festival with an excited crowd marveling at early show designs. Mister Miracle was a 12-issue comic written by King, with art by Mitch Gerads (The Sheriff of Babylon, Strange Adventures), focusing on the character Scott Free, whose alter ego was an expert escape artist and worldwide celebrity. While few details have been revealed, the logline is described as follows: “No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick — and escape death itself?”
The series will see Miracle’s and his wife, Big Barda’s, perfect existence on Earth rocked by a tragic event, via Deadline. A cast has not yet been selected.
King, a former CIA officer, has written several comics throughout his career, including Marvel Comics’ critically acclaimed The Vision and multiple Batman graphic novels, which earned him the Eisner Award for Best Writer in 2018. Currently, he’s working on HBO’s Lanterns series with Kyle Chandler (Bloodline, Friday Night Lights) and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge, Old). And his Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is the basis of the DC Studios film.
Mister Miracle joins Max’s Creature Commandos, an adult animated series that follows a group of monster beings under Amanda Waller’s control. Premiering last December, its second season is currently underway. Other TV projects announced within DC Studios’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters include a Waller series starring Viola Davis (G20, The Help), a project focused on Wonder Woman’s homeland, Themyscira, and a live-action Booster Gold series.
