Comic-Con Exclusive: Marvel Studios Announces ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Series With Charlie Cox Returning As Matt Murdock

Marvel owned Hall H this evening during the first in-person Comic-Con in San Diego in three years. Along with the Phase 5 film slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Comicbook reports a familiar face is returning in a new series at Disney+ with the official announcement of Daredevil: Born Again starring Charlie Cox (Stardust). The new series is slated to have 18 total episodes.

Earlier this year reports a new Daredevil series was in development with Cox attached to reprise his Netflix show role as the blind attorney, Matt Murdock, who moonlights as Hell’s Kitchen’s hero. This news arrived months after the character first reappeared in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cox is also set to appear in the upcoming Echo series alongside his Daredevil costar, Vincent D’Onofrio (The Unforgiveable) as the abominable Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.

According to Comicbook, the new series will be based on a comic run of the same name created by Frank Miller (Sin City) and David Mazzucchelli (Batman: Year One). In Born Again, Murdock experiences one of his darkest battles against his main foe Kingpin. Cox spoke to Comicbook about this specific story earlier this year when discussing the possible return of Daredevil after Disney+ purchased the rights to the original 2015 Netflix series.

“This was actually when this news that you talked about came out, I was texting with some of the guys from the show and the text I wrote was, ‘Born Again,'” Cox said via Comicbook. Given the mature nature of the original series, which ran through 2018 before its cancellation, fans worried if the Disney streamer could deliver a lighter, family-friendly fare.

“I wouldn’t put it past the folks at Marvel to be able to accomplish that,” Cox told Comicbook. “I’m such a fan of everything they’ve done so far, I wouldn’t underestimate them at all. So if they wanted to make a more PG version of Daredevil, I back them to find a way to do where it feels totally in keeping with everything we’ve done. And maybe there’s a little less blood, maybe there’s a little whatever, but I back them to do it.”

Disney+ could very well develop a less adult version of the new series. However, their recent acquisition of all the Netflix series and the addition of films Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan now allow parental controls to keep mature content out of the reach of children.

While we will have to wait to see Daredevil: Born Again as it has no release date, we can see Cox’s Daredevil sooner than later. Deadline confirmed the long-rumored appearance of Murdock in the upcoming series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law set for an August 17th premiere. A new and final trailer for the half-hour comedy showcases seven seconds of a red-blood-suited acrobat meeting Tatiana Malsany’s (Perry Mason) Jennifer Walters upon a roof, twin batons in hand before fading to black.

All three seasons of Daredevil are currently streaming exclusively on Disney+.
