According to the official Warner Bros. press release, at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con 2024, a first look at the upcoming adult animated series Creature Commandos was revealed to attendees at the “Jim Lee & Friends” panel. The teaser for the Max Original series was presented by James Gunn, CEO and Co-Chair of DC Studios (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad), who wrote the scripts for the new action-packed superhero saga. This teaser is available below.
According to mxdwn, Creature Commandos kicks off Gunn and CEO and Co-Chair of DC Studios, Peter Safran’s (Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Annabelle: Creation) reboot of the DC universe–crafting and producing media for the DC realm that is more cohesive between movies, television and game properties than previously recognized.
As for what’s in store for the adult animated series, the official logline revealed that “Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option,” via the official press release. Mxdwn also provided additional context, reporting that “Creature Commandos were first featured in Weird War Tales issue #93 as a last resort outfit to take down Nazis during WWI. The non-human ensemble first consisted of monsters like a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster, and a gorgon. This iteration of the team will include a mix of humans and creatures alike.”
The voice cast for Creature Commandos will feature the talents of “Russ Bain (Lift) as Craic Brothers, Viola Davis (Suicide Squad) as Amanda Waller, Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) as G.I Robot, Indira Varma (Rome) as Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk (Harley Quinn) as Phosphorus, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Eric Frankenstein, Frank Gillo (What If…?) as Rick Flag Sr, and many others,“ who are also in talks to reprise these roles across the DC Universe as a part of DC Studios’ effort towards continuity, as per mxdwn.
The trailer promises a mix of monsters, mischief, adult humor and of course, outrageous action for the misfit taskforce. Tudyk, who is starring as Doctor Phosphorus, revered the script as “one of the best he’s read,” according to mxdwn. Gunn recently shared that “the new series picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale, which leaves [Amanda] Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions. Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker” via mxdwn.
Creature Commandos will consist of seven episodes for its first season and will exclusively be available to stream on Max this December, as per the official press release.
