CNN Greenlights Three Original Historical Series Focusing on the Nineties, Comedy, and Music

CNN has three original series coming titled Soundtracks: Songs That Made History (working title), The History of Comedy, and The Nineties. The names of the three series pretty much reveals what the shows will be about.

Soundtracks: Song That Made History, is an eight-part series that explores many iconic musical moments in history. For example, each episode will cover a tragedy, triumph, or the start of a movement. And what come next is the music that defines that era. Such historical moments include Hurricane Katrina, the moon landing, March on Washington, and also the riots that occurred at Stonewall. Music has always played a pivotal role in placing focus on a moment in time whether that is to celebrate, criticize, or amplify that moment in history. Soundtracks is produced by Show of Force and Seven Bucks Productions and will be executive-produced by Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz.

Like Soundtracks, The History of Comedy will also be an eight-part series that will show some of the many things that made people laugh throughout history. From the Ancient Greeks and Shakespeare to vaudeville and the present. The historical comedy series will be executive-produced by Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner (Hazy Mills) and Emmy Award Winners Mark Herzog, and Christopher G. Cowen (Herzog & Company). The show will use archival footage, original comedic material, as well as interviews. The History of Comedy will also showcase how the art form has transformed over the years.

The Nineties will be similar to CNN’s decade series The Sixties, The Seventies, and The Eighties. The series will be executive produced by Emmy Award Winners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman in association with HBO and Emmy Award Winning producer Mark Herzog. The show will be an eight-part series also and will center on the various cultural and political milestones that defined the nineties. Including former president Bill Clinton’s impeachment to the rise of the internet.

The three historical series will launch next year with CNN’s series Believer with Reza Aslan.
