Get ready to meet the new grown-up Powerpuff Girls. According to Deadline, The CW has found their crime fighting trio in Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Dove Cameron (Liv & Maddie), and Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill).
Based on the original animated Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken (writer, Wander Over Yonder), The CW’s live-action The Powerpuff Girls will reunite fans with Blossom (played by Bennet), Bubblegum (played by Cameron), and Buttercup (played by Perrault) who are now in their mid-twenties. According to Deadline, the trio resents the fact that the formative years of their childhood were spent fighting the evils of the world, and have now become disillusioned. However, the series will find the girls in a dangerous world that is depending on them to reunite and save it one more time.
Via Deadline, Bennet’s Blossom is set to be the golden child who holds several advanced degrees. She’s left with childhood trauma that has made her into a recluse who’s once peppy attitude has drifted away. Despite this, she still yearns to lead the team in her own unique way.
Cameron’s Bubblegum still maintains her bubbly personality in her adulthood, but beneath it lies a hidden toughness, via Deadline. In rejoining her sisters as a superhero team, Bubbles initially seeks fame, but her unsuspecting cleverness might be more of an asset to the team than even she can anticipate.
According to Deadline, Perrault’s Buttercup will be seen attempting to abandon her superhero persona in order to live a more secluded adulthood. She is expected to still be the rebel of the group who’s tough exterior guards her hidden sensitive side.
The Powerpuff Girls has been ordered to pilot and will been written by Diablo Cody (writer, Jennifer’s Body) and Heather Reigner (producer, Veronica Mars). Maggie Kiley (director, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to direct the pilot episode. According to Deadline, the show will be produced by Berlanti Productions in partnership with Warner Bros. TV and Vita Vera Films.
