CBS Wants to Reboot ‘Cagney and Lacey’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’

Television continues on the remake train with a popular 1980s show.

CBS has made a pilot commitment to remaking the show Magnum P.I. This show is a 1980-1988 crime show classic that is set in Hawaii which was starred by Tom Selleck. Peter Lenkov (Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, and The Blacklist) with his co-writer Eric Guggenheim will feature a show that is similar to the original version. Lenkov and Guggenheim are co-showrunnering the show together. There has been a change in the characters within the show. Instead of being four guys, it will be three guys and one girl. The one girl being Juliet Higgins replacing John Hillerman.

The reboot show is described as an updated version of the original television series. The main character of the show (Thomas Magnum), is a decorated ex-Navy SEAL. Upon his return home from Afghanistan, he adapts his military skills to become a private investigator. Magnum takes on the cases no one else will. The show will focus on the bond of brotherhood an ex-solider creates that has returned home. The reboot is also expected to be set in Hawaii.

Tom Selleck who now stars on Blue Blue is not linked to the show currently. However, a cameo is possible in the future.

John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment will be executive producers of the show with Lenkov and Guggenheim. The pilot is co-produced by CBS Television Studios.

CBS also wants to reboot Cagney and Lacey as well. This reboot is written by Bridget Carpenter (11.22.63, Westworld, Friday Night Lights). The show focuses on two female police detectives and their friends to keep the streets of L.A. safe. The original series for the show lasted for seven seasons from 1982-1988. The stars for the show were Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless. CBS Television Studios is co-producing the show with MGM Television. Carpenter will be the writer and executive producer.

The original show had won multiple awards. It won two best drama Emmys and also six lead actress roles in a drama series trophies. Four for Daly and the other two for Gless.
