CBS’ ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Releases New Trailer and Teases a New Spock that has Already Been Cast

During San Diego Comic-Con CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery revealed a new trailer for season two. The next season pick up right where the first left off. The first season ended with the Discovery finding itself face-to-face with the USS Enterprise, which is lead by the well known James Kirk. However, because Star Trek: Discovery‘s timeline takes place ten years before Captain Kirk takes over the enterprise, right now it is in the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount).

Here’s the trailer:

What fans should be excited for is that Pike is not the only notable Star Trek character working on the Enterprise in this time period, Spock is as well. Spock (who was played by the late Leonard Nimoy), in this show. is Pike’s Science Officer. At the Discovery Spock’s father, Sarek (James Frain), was aboard the spaceship when Captain Pike sent out a distress call. Sarek was there along with his adopted human daughter, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). She is heavily featured in the new trailer wanting to go and help her brother.

Martin-Green said during the Emmy campaign for Discovery’s first season said, “We’re just as excited [as we were for season one], but there is a blanket of peace in this sense of preparedness because we’re familiar with it and because we have our experiential knowledge from last year. Now, we have a little bit more hold on what it is that we’re doing, the universe we’re in, the story that we’re telling, the roles that each of us have within the story. We’re hopefully very boldly, if I may say, going higher and deeper.”

During Comic-Con, it was also confirmed that a new Spock has been cast. Star Trek: Discovery co-creator, executive producer, and new showrunner Alex Kurtzman said that they have already picked an actor to play as Spock this coming season. However, he is staying tight lipped on who the actor actually is.

Kurtzman said, “Everybody assumes that just because Spock is all about logic, that there is no emotion in there and that’s entirely untrue. So, finding an actor who can convey what we know to be very Vulcan, but also reveal so much emotion in the eyes and in the small gestures, so you understand there’s just a tornado of things happening under the surface is critical. So you need an actor who can do both of those things at the same time, which is very challenging.”

The trailer showed that Spock has taken a leave of absence from the USS Enterprise because of a mystery that he is confused by. The mysterious red spots that are popping up throughout space is one that all of them are worried and confused about. Even Pike takes over the command of the Discovery in order to figure out what these spots might mean.

It is interesting though that they decided not to reveal the actor that will play Spock at Comic-on. It is pretty much the stage in order to make the announcement. Instead, they simply teased him to the audience. One possibility for it to not be revealed could be that there is something story related to his reveal.
