This year marks the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek series, which means we are due for a reboot.
CBS announced last year they were looking to reboot the Star Trek franchise, and ever since the series has been coming together piece by piece. In February CBS tapped Brian Fuller (Hannibal) as the series showrunner. Fuller is actually a Star Trek veteran having served as writer for both Star Trek: Voyager and Deep Space Nine. And earlier this month, CBS announced the new Star Trek series would begin filming this fall in Toronto.
And to continue the excitement, CBS revealed a teaser trailer for the upcoming series this week at their upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall. The trailer doesn’t show much, but we do get a first look at the new logo with a side of nostalgia courtesy of the original Star Trek theme.

Currently, not many details about the plot and character have been released. But the trailer does promise “New crews. New villains. New heroes. New worlds.”
Digital Trends reports rumors that the new Star Trek might actually be an anthology-type series with each season following a new set of characters and plot. Each season would occur at different points along the Star Trek timeline. The first season has unofficially been reported to take place between the events of the last film to feature the original cast, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
No casting announcements have been made as of yet.
This upcoming series will be the first Star Trek TV series since Enterprise ended in 2005. From 1987 through 2005 Star Trek enjoyed a steady presence on the small screen with The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise.
The first episode of Star Trek will premiere on network television with subsequent episodes being released on CBS All Access, its online streaming service. Those interested can sign up for a CBS All Access subscription for six dollars per month.
CBS also announced a spinoff of The Good Wife which will also stream exclusively on CBS All Access.
For the trekkies out there who don’t want to wait until 2017 for new Star Trek, the feature film Star Trek: Beyond hits theaters next month.
