After a slew of show cancellations across networks and streamers as of late, one popular series will live again. Deadline reported Thursday that the shelved Magnum P.I. reboot would continue at NBC. A two-season order of ten episodes each will see Jay Hernandez (Hostel, Crazy/Beautiful) resume the iconic role of Thomas Magnum. The series was canceled at CBS in May after four seasons.
While the cancellation came as a surprise, Deadline reports Universal TV, which shares production responsibility with CBS Studios, quickly began shopping the show to new networks. NBC and USA quickly became potential buyers. The deal went into the late hours Thursday as CBS’ options for the cast expired on June 30. Once the cast was free, NBC and Universal began bargaining.
According to Deadline, Hernandez will return with the full cast that includes Amy Hill (All-American Girl, 50 First Dates), Stephen Hill (Jack of the Red Hearts, Dead Man Down), Tim Kang (Rambo, The Mentalist), Zachary Knighton (Happy Endings, Believe Me), and Perdita Weeks (As Above, So Below, Titantic). As the news broke in the early hours of Friday morning, the cast shared their joy and thanked the fans across social media.
“It was a bit circuitous but we did it!” Hernandez stated via Twitter. “Your love & support helped get us over the finish line, thank you & thanks to @nbc for stepping up! Time to dust off the Aloha shirt! #ohana”
Hernandez was joined by Kang, Hill, and Kinghton who all expressed their gratitude on Twitter, according to Deadline. Knighton stated,” This one is for the FANS. You guys are AMAZING!”
Weeks, who portrays Magnum’s British handler Juliet Higgins, posted a photo on Instagram with the quote “Off to the see the Ohana.”
The series, based on the original 80s show starring Tom Selleck (Blue Bloods, Three Men and a Baby) will see all of its executive creatives return. According to Deadline, showrunner Eric Guggenheim (Miracle, Parenthood) is set to return along with executive producers John Davis (Game Night, Dolemite Is My Name), John Fox (Prey, The Player), and Justin Lin (The Endgame, S.W.A.T.).
Season four of Magnum P.I. is available to stream on Paramount+.
