CBS All Access’ ‘Why Women Kill’ Creator Marc Cherry Plans to Turn Show Into an Anthology Series

Why Women Kill creator, Marc Cherry, took to the stage at the TCA Summer Press Tour last week to drop a couple of hints about his upcoming dark comedy mystery starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. The 10-episode series follows three women from three different decades who deal with infidelity in their marriages.

“There are three murders, three deaths at the end of the series, but they’re not all committed by the women you see on stage today (Goodwin, Liu or Howell-Baptiste) nor are the men (Reid Scott, Jack Davenport) necessarily the victims,” Cherry said. “And no one person is killed due to infidelity. Infidelity is just the catalyst for the series.”

Ryan Murphy is well-known for creating successful anthology series, American Horror Story – an idea that Cherry credits with inspiring his own work. “What Ryan Murphy introduced to TV with the repertory theater company of it all, I’m jealous as all get out,” said Cherry.

Cherry looks to develop season two of Why Women Kill in a similar fashion with the same actors. “I have an idea of Season 2 and I’m absolutely going to try and bring back as many people as I can,” he said.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve, The Good Place) was cast in the show without an audition. “Whether it’s through this show or another one, Kirby is about to become a very big deal,” said Cherry. The actress stars alongside Goodwin and Liu as a power lawyer in the year 2018.

Kirby had attended drama school before dropping out after two semesters and finding herself attached to comedy. Kirby’s trust in her talent led her towards some memorable roles.

“If you’ve got the talent but not the connections, if you don’t necessarily have the financial means to do classes and never work, it gives you a springboard,” said Kirby.

The Why Women Kill series premiere will be on August 15 on CBS’s streaming service, CBS All Access.
