While fans of the YouTube docuseries BuzzFeed Unsolved may have been hoping that the mystery of when the show would end would remain unsolved, creator and co-host Ryan Bergara (Ruining History, Too Many Spirits) broke the unfortunate news that the series would be wrapping up this year. Bergara posted the teaser trailer for the final season of BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime on his Instagram, sharing the news that BuzzFeed Unsolved: Supernatural will likewise be receiving its final season in the fall.
Co-hosts Bergara and Shane Madej (Ruining History, Too Many Spirits) have been wheezing around metaphorical crime scenes and literal haunted locales since 2016 across the series BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime and BuzzFeed Unsolved: Supernatural. The boy’s Mulder and Scully dynamic of skeptic versus believer has garnered them around 1.3 billion and more than 16.6 billion minutes of total watch-time in the preceding years, via Variety. Even when Bergara and Madej left BuzzFeed to start their independent YouTube channel Watcher in 2019, they continued to tackle new mysteries in further installments of BuzzFeed Unsolved.
However, in just ten days, on June 18 at 3 p.m. PT, BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime will begin its morbid farewell. According to Variety, the final season will contain six new episodes and feature the high-profile deaths of Princess Diana and George Reeves among its cases. Monday’s teaser also show’s Bergara and Madej reunited behind the BuzzFeed Unsolved desk, a set-up they had to temporarily abandon during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I hope this closure is as satisfying to you guys (fans of the show) as it is to me,” Bergara expressed his deep gratitude toward the fans and the creative team behind BuzzFeed Unsolved in his Monday Instagram announcement about the series ending. “None of this would have been possible without the passion of Shaniacs and Boogaras,” Madej referenced the series duel-fanbase in statement provided by Variety “this will be one thrilling final year for the fans as we dive into our favorite, most-requested crimes and mysteries.”
After BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime wraps, fans will get the chance to go ghoul-hunting with the boys and their spirit box one last time in the final season of BuzzFeed Unsolved: Supernatural. Unlike True Crime, no news about the cases or release schedule for Supernatural has been given at this point, only that the series’ conclusion will come in the fall.
Variety reports that both final seasons will continue the tradition of Bergara and Madej’s after-show BuzzFeed Unsolved: Post Mortem, in which they get the chance to discuss the cases more directly with fans. Perhaps these episodes, much to Bergara’s chagrin, will bring final updates to “The Hotdaga,” an increasingly ridiculous story centered on a cast of anthropomorphic food concocted and performed by Madej during Post Mortem.
Though the BuzzFeed series that introduced fans to Bergara and Madej will be coming to a close in just a few short months, the two will continue their creative partnership on their Watcher YouTube channel where they appear in series such as Are You Scared? and Too Many Spirits.
