It was announced Monday that Busy Philipps (Cougar Town) was cast in the upcoming comedy series Girls5eva at Peacock. Created by Meredith Scardino (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and executive produced by Tina Fey (30 Rock), it is helmed by comedy’s most acclaimed writers. Philipps will portray a washed up member from an all girls rock band via Deadline.
Girls5eva tells the story of an all girls rock band who were once famous in the 1990s. Deemed as a one hit wonder, they were never a permanent fixture in the music scene. Flash forward to present day and they’ve all gone their separate ways with some struggling more than others. Then, they get a taste of fame when their hit song gets played by a current day artist and they decide to give stardom another try.
The lead singer of the band, Wickie, will be portrayed by Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) with the casting announcement made last week. Sara Bareilles (Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!) will star as former band member Dawn who now runs her family’s restaurant in Queens. Philipps has been cast as Summer, a kind of ditsy and cheerful member of the group. Now living in New Jersey, she has faded away from the music scene.
Philipps took to instagram to confirm the news that she will be starring in the upcoming comedy series. See her post below:
