Bravo Picks Up ‘Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce’ as First Scripted Series

The series, starring Lisa Edelstein (House) gets an order of 13 episodes from the network.

Bravo Media is officially a scripted series player by giving a series order to Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. The series, written by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Glee producer, Marti Noxon, has received a 13-episode order for a premiere in 2015. Based on the best-selling Girlfriends’ Guide books by Vicki Iovine, the story centers Abby (Edelstein) as a self-help book author who is secretly hiding her separation from her husband. She begins her single-woman life in her early 40s in Los Angeles and she finds herself seeking advice from her divorced friends, rather her married ones. This leads her to some unexpected experiences.

Janeane Garofalo, Beau Garrett and Paul Adelstein will also star in the series, with Carrie Fisher making a cameo in the first episode.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce offers a fresh take on women tackling life after divorce with the help of their girlfriends,” said Andrew Wang, vp scripted development and production at Bravo. “For our first scripted show, we wanted something that was sophisticated, funny and honest. We’re thrilled to have the talented Marti Noxon breaking this new ground with Bravo.”

Over the years, Bravo has had several scripted projects in play, including the comedy pilot Rita with Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn, which did not make it past the pilot stage, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Noxon said “Everybody knows this was all an elaborate scheme to get myself on Watch What Happens Live!” She also said: “Seriously, I can’t thank everyone enough at Bravo and Universal Cable Productions for making Girlfriends’ something special. I am confident that Lisa is going to be TV’s next girl crush; she’s certainly mine.”

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce’ is Noxon’s second series order, following Lifetime’s 10-episode pickup for the dark comedy Un-Real with Shiri Appleby.
