According to ScreenRant, Bill Skarsgård (The Crow, Boy Kills World) teases how hardcore the character of Pennywise will be in HBO’s It: Welcome To Derry six years after playing the character. Skarsgård played the horrific clown in Andy Muschietti’s (Mama, Locke & Key) two-part IT adaptation of Stephen King’s (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, I Am the Doorway) novel and will be back for the television series.
As per ScreenRant, Skarsgård spoke with Josh Horowitz (Charlie Rose, Junketeers) of the Happy Sad Confused podcast about the show’s version of the psychotic child-killing clown. The actor expressed that the clown will be just as evil as in the film or even more.
Skarsgård said, “It’s pretty hardcore, man. It’s not the G-rated Pennywise.”
He then explained why he came back into the role, stating that he believed his monster playing days were over.
Skarsgård said, “I felt like I was done with it, in a way. It was also because I was shooting [Nosferatu], I was doing Orlok. To me it just felt like this is the nail in the coffin on my monster roles. Pun intended. I did feel like I was kind of over it and wanted to do different things. The Pennywise thing as well, I’ve been quite defined by it.”
He continued, “It was fun. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, actually, and there’s parts of it where we got to explore sides of old Pennywise that we haven’t seen. And that’s fun. I remembered how much I enjoy working with Andy and we do have a lot of fun together. I think there’s some cool stuff in there that we haven’t seen that I’m excited for the people to watch and enjoy hopefully.”
The series follows the origins of Pennywise the Clown and his torment on the town of Derry and its inhabitants.
It: Welcome To Derry is scheduled to premiere sometime this year.
