Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) will return for the second time as host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live on May 7 – just after the release of Marvel’s Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, according to Deadline. The Oscar-nominated actor made his debut on the comedy series in November 2016.
Now five years later, and Cumberbatch is fresh off the success of the Netflix drama The Power of the Dog, for which he received Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Awards nominations. The upcoming episode will also feature indie rock band Arcade Fire for its fifth appearance as musical guest on Saturday Night Live, after their performances in 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2018.
The show’s 2022 host lineup has included Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Will Forte (MacGruber), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), John Mulaney (Big Mouth), Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies), Jerrod Carmichael (On the Count of Three), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nocturnal Animals) and most recently, singer Lizzo, who doubled as host and musical guest this past Saturday.
While Cumberbatch was most well-known for his contributions to Marvel Studios as Dr. Stephen Strange, he has also starred in films like The Imitation Game and The Power of the Dog, as well as Marvel’s first animated television series, What If…? and the upcoming TV mini series The 39 Steps.
