The A List, once a co-production between Netflix and the BBC, will now be Netflix’s sole responsibility, a report from Deadline confirms. The British side of the production has decided against commissioning a second season of the teen-drama series.
The series originally began without Netflix’s involvement, made exclusively for the BBC’s streaming platform iPlayer with the help of Kindle Entertainment, backed by Lionsgate. Netflix got involved in the project in July of this year, when they began distributing the British series internationally. Since then, the BBC has backed out of the project, but show creators Nina Metivier and Dan Berlinka have confirmed that this will not be the end of The A List. Metivier revealed in an interview with Deadline that the two are already developing second season of The A List with Netflix.
The first season of The A List was a typical teen drama in the vein of Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars. The story follows Mia, played by Lisa Ambalavanar, as she arrives at summer camp on a remote island and meets a mysterious girl named Amber, played by Ellie Duckles. Metivier stated that the success of the first season of the show is what convinced Netflix to stay on board: “It was picked up by Netflix for worldwide and now they’re looking at a second series.”
The A List isn’t the only show Netflix has saved from cancellation. In the past, the streaming platform has picked up a number of cancelled shows from American broadcast, including Arrested Development, Designated Survivor, and most recently the show Lucifer, which will be airing its fifth and final season on Netflix exclusively.
