Doctor Who won’t be exterminated anytime soon, according to Deadline’s Jake Canter. A message from the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) new chief content officer, Kate Phillips, reassured fans amidst an uncertain streaming landscape that the revival of the long-running science fiction series will keep trudging on, “with or without Disney.”
Phillips’ statement comes after months of rumors that Doctor Who has been cancelled by the BBC after the subdued reception of Season 15, which ended with the Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, Masters of the Air) regenerating into Billie Piper (True Love, Penny Dreadful) after a relatively short tenure on the show (if it seems like Gatwa should be the Fourteenth Doctor, that’s because David Tennant (Good Omens, Jessica Jones) technically filled that role when he returned for a few television specials between seasons).
It’s also no secret that Who has been hemorrhaging ratings over the last couple seasons, with the show losing over two million average watchers over the last two seasons. The reasons behind this ratings decline are unclear — British tabloid The Sun attributes the failure to “shoehorning wokery into storylines,” while many fans instead point to the negative reception of previous showrunner Chris Chibnall’s (Life on Mars, Law and Order: UK) stint on the show — but the results are unmistakable. Current showrunner Russell T Davies (Queer as Folk, The Sarah Jane Adventures) wrote in a June production diary that “we don’t know what’s happening yet” in regards to the series’ future. Many have also suspected that Disney+, which co-produces the show and facilitates its release outside of the United Kingdom, might be preparing to pull the plug. But whether or not that comes to pass, the BBC doesn’t seem to be giving up on Who just yet.
“Rest assured, Doctor Who is going nowhere,” said Phillips at the Edinburgh TV Festival, per Deadline. “Disney has been a great partnership — and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year — but going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC … The Tardis is going nowhere.”
Season 16 of Doctor Who, which will feature British actress and former companion Billie Piper as the new Doctor, will premiere at an unknown date. The 15 seasons, meanwhile, are streaming now on Disney+.
