BBC Announces New Streaming Platform for ‘Doctor Who’

According to the official Doctor Who website, the popular British show will be changing the streaming platform in which it can be watched outside of the UK. It was recently announced in an interview with the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education, Stonemouth), that BBC has come to an agreement with Disney that states that the new episodes of Doctor Who will now be streamed on Disney+.

This new arrangement will allow new and future generations to enjoy the British TV show on an unprecedented scale. Disney+ will exclusively stream the new seasons of Doctor Who around the world, excluding the UK and Ireland. This new deal begins a collaboration between two of the giants of entertainment.

According to the official Doctor Who website, showrunner Russell T. Davies (Torchwood, Queer as Folk) is set to return to the show in 2023, many years after he left. Davies is the one responsible for the revival of the show in 2005 and is credited with making the series one of TV’s most popular shows again.

The announcement comes a few days after the final episode of Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch, Trust Me) as the Doctor premiered. The episode, titled “The Power of the Doctor,” is part of BBC’s centennial celebrations. The plot twist ending of the episode has left fans wondering when they will see the Doctor again.

The new episodes will premiere in November 2023, in time for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. The episodes will be available to watch on BBC and Disney+ for fans all over the world. The cast that has been announced for the special episodes includes Doctor Who veterans David Tennant (Good Omens, Jessica Jones) and Catherine Tate (Hard Cell, Big School), that appeared together in the fourth season of the show, and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Uncoupled) starring as a new villain.

According to the official Doctor Who website, Davies is excited about the new partnership with Disney+ and what this will entail for the show. He has said that having the two giants of entertainment will help the TARDIS travel all around the globe and that this new partnership will help the show reach a new generation of fans.

The president of Disney+ Alisa Bowen has also expressed the excitement going on over at Disney+. She has said that the company is excited to introduce new audiences from over 150 countries to the classic British show. She has also said that the show is a perfect addition to the platform that is home to exceptional storytelling.

The new episodes will premiere in November 2023 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. Season one through thirteen of the show are available to watch on HBO Max. Also, don’t forget to check out the teaser trailer for the new episodes below.
