Deadline reports that Prime Video is bringing Ballard back for another round. The Bosch spinoff, starring Maggie Q (Nikita, Designated Survivor), has been officially renewed for a second season, with cast and crew receiving the news late this week.
As noted by Deadline, a representative from Amazon MGM Studios, the series’ producer, declined to comment on the update.
The announcement comes around three months after the full first season broadcast on July 9. According to Deadline, the show’s renewal is unsurprising considering its great critical reaction and streaming statistics. The criminal thriller has a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has received over 2.5 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States in its first month. It also appeared several times in Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 for original streaming titles, rising as high as No. 4 during the week of July 21.
In August, Ballard secured a $14.84 million tax credit from the California Film Commission, which strengthened its argument for renewal even more. As outlined by Deadline’s piece, the incentive all but confirmed that season two was on its way. The publication also claims that discussions around Prime Video renewals have heated up in recent weeks. These selections may have been delayed by recent executive changes at Amazon MGM Studios, which saw Peter Friedlander take over as Head of Global TV when Vernon Sanders departed.
Ballard, which draws influence from the work of popular author Michael Connelly (The Lincoln Lawyer, Bosch: Legacy), follows Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) as she leads the LAPD’s struggling cold case squad. She examines forgotten crimes alongside a team of volunteers and retired investigator Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver, Sons of Anarchy, Deadwood), which leads to a greater conspiracy within the department. As Deadline notes, the series combines human drama, police procedural intensity, and psychological depth.
The ensemble cast also features Courtney Taylor (Insecure), Michael Mosley (Ozark), Rebecca Field (A Star Is Born), Victoria Moroles (Teen Wolf), Amy Hill (Magnum P.I.), and John Carroll Lynch (Fargo). Behind the scenes, the series is executive produced by Connelly (The Lincoln Lawyer), Henrik Bastin (Bosch, The Killing), Michael Alaimo (The Closer, The Man in the High Castle), Kendall Sherwood (Major Crimes), Trish Hofmann (Bosch: Legacy), Jet Wilkinson (The Chi), and Melissa Aouate (Three Pines), with Jasmine Russ (Bosch: Legacy), Jamie Boscardin Martin (Mayans M.C.), Trey Batchelor (S.W.A.T.), and Theresa Snider (The Rookie) serving as co-executive producers details first highlighted by Deadline. Bastin (Bosch, The Killing) and Alaimo (The Closer, The Man in the High Castle) are among the key figures driving the series’ creative direction.
