‘Bad Girls’ Anthology Series In The Works at UCP

Ann Shen’s book, Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World, is being developed for a television series at UCP. Bad Girls will be an anthology series that showcases influential women throughout history. Each episode will be written, directed, and star differing female teams. Women that may appear in the television series include Rosa Parks, Ada Lovelace, Mata Hari, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Echo Lake Entertainment is producing the project with Liz Hannah (The Post, Long Shot). Hannah is attached as a writer and executive producer. Hannah has been nominated for Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Award. She is a WGA Award winner for her screenplay The Post, which was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. Ry Russo-Young (Before I Fall, The Sun is Also a Star) is on-board to direct the pilot episode in addition to executive producing with Hannah. Hannah said about Bad Girls, “Ann Shen’s book is all that needs to be said about the ambitions of this show. To depict women throughout history as they are: complex, funny, dark and everywhere in between. As a longtime admirer of Ry’s work, I’m ecstatic that Bad Girls will be the beneficiary of her unique vision and talent. I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Ann, Ry, Brittany & Graciella, and the entire team at UCP in bringing these women’s stories to audiences everywhere.”

Russo-Young most recently directed an adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s 2016 New York Times bestseller, The Sun Is Also A Star. She co-wrote Nobody Walks with Lena Dunham which won a special Jury Prize at Sundance. Russo-Young also made a statement regarding the project, “Bad Girls is an incredible opportunity to focus not on a single character or genre, but a kind of uncompromising personality that inhabits great women throughout history. I’m thrilled to work with Liz Hannah who so smartly creates iconic characters with the quiet power of her writing.”

UCP is currently shopping Bad Girls to networks and streamers.
