Sigmund Freud is making his way to Netflix with an Austrian crime thriller series titled Freud. The show is set in Vienna in 1886 and is also in German, but it will be released internationally. It is about young version of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and he teams up with a medium and a police inspector to take part in a nerve-racking investigation to find a serial killer.
While Freud’s theories are being challenged by his colleagues and Austrian society, he meets Alfred Kiss a war veteran and a policeman. He also find himself with a notorious medium Fleur Salomé. Freud then ends up finds himself becoming a part of a serial killer hunt. The thriller series will combine the time period setting with a more contemporary style. It is advertised as a modern, sexy, and suspenseful take on the life of the controversial psychoanalyst.
Marvin Kren is set to direct Freud and production for the series is expected to begin in fall 2018. He has worked on the popular German TNT Series 4 Blocks and Tatort. Kren will be co-writing the series with both: Stefan Brunner and Benjamin Hessler. Executive producers for the series are: Heinrich Ambrosch (Austria’s Satel Film) and Moritz Polter (Bavaria Fiction). The international sales for the show will be taken care of by ZDF Enterprises.
Freud will become the first original drama out of Austria for Netflix, and casting has begun. This comes after Netflix had success with Dark, German mystery series, which recieved a season two renewal recently. For their new series Freud, it was one of the few projects that were pitched at the Berlin Drama Series Days in 2017.
The first season of Freud is expected to be eight episodes.
