‘August Snow:’ Keegan-Michael Key to Star and Executive Produce ABC Drama from Paul Eckstein

Actor Keegan-Michael Key (The Prom, Friend from College) is returning to television. According to Deadline, the Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey star is set to lead and executive produce a new drama series based on Stephen Mack Jones’ (Lives Laid Away, Dead of Winter) August Snow novels. The series comes from Paul Eckstein (Godfather of Harlem, Narcos) who will executive produce along with Key and Imagine Television Studios.

According to DeadlineAugust Snow follows a decorated military veteran who becomes a private investigator in his hometown of Detroit. As he tends to solve crimes his own way, he will be met with opposition from both the law and the streets. Prior to his new profession, Snow garnered enemies after winning a wrongful termination lawsuit against the police force. As a PI, he is seen as a Robin Hood savior for his community.

Jones published the first of his Snow trilogy in 2017, according to Deadline. The series was awarded several accolades, including the Nero Award for mystery writing and the Hammett Prize from the International Association of Crime Writers. Jones will serve as a consulting producer on the show.

According to Deadline, Brain Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster) and Samie Kim Falvey (68 Whiskey, Langdon) will executive produce through Imagine Studios, with James Seidman (Joe Exotic, Wu-Tang: An American Saga) and Nicole Scott overseeing the project. Jeff Gaspin (Dateline NBC, Project Runway) and Tony Sabistina (Mr. Nice Guy, Illusion of Justice) will produce via Gapsin Media. Key’s wife and business partner, Elle Key (School of Rock, Boy Meets Girl), will also produce.

Key was most recently seen in Ryan Murphy’s (Ratached, American Crime Story) Netflix film, The Prom, as well as David Talbert’s (Almost Christmas, First Sunday) holiday musical, Jingle Jangle. He is most known for the Comedy Central series Key & Peele, which he did jointly with horror thriller Get Out director, Jordan Peele (Us, Keanu). The series debuted in 2012 and aired for five seasons. The sketch comedy and variety series won an Emmy and Peabody award.
