The Apple TV+ streaming service has announced that the graphic novel Strange Planet will become a full-length series on the platform with creators Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community) and Nathan Pyle (Strange Planet) joining the creative side, according to Deadline. Pyle is a New York Times bestselling author known for creating this comic book series and its multicolor blob characters. The graphic novel series has become incredibly successful with its Instagram account amassing a total of 6.1 million followers.
Strange Planet centers on unspecified blue “beings” that roam an unknown planet that encounters unique instances of everyday life within their inhabitants. Currently, the series has been published in two books in addition to Pyle creating online webcomic versions of his story world. Apple’s involvement with this new animated development adds to its young animated lineup that includes Central Park. In addition to Apple Studios joining forces for the comic adaptation, the series will also be produced by the likes of ShadowMachine, a production house that is responsible for the creation and animation of Netflix’s Bojack Horseman. Harmon and Pyle will also executive produce the series, joined by Steve Levy (Rick and Morty, Community), Taylor Alexy Pyle, and Amalia Levari (Summer Camp Island, Costume Quest).
Harmon’s involvement adds to his growing list of animated projects with Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, which recently premiered its season five on June 20, in addition to his upcoming Fox animated series Krapopolis.
Currently, it is unknown when the series will begin its production and when it will premiere on the Apple TV+ platform.
