IndieWire reported this week that filmmaker Damien Chazelle, the writer and director of such acclaimed films as Whiplash and La La Land, will now be working on a television series for Apple. Chazelle will write and direct the series, whose details are being kept secret for now.
It’s a strange thought, but with their Apple TV service, Apple has joined the race between both cable networks and streaming providers for creating cutting-edged original content. The news broke this past summer that the tech company would be pledging a whopping $1 billion to creating original video content for its customers.
Over the past few months, Apple has announced plans for several new original series, including series from Steven Spielberg, Kristen Wigg, and a drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. Now, Chazelle will be joining the ranks as well.
Chazelle also has a television series planned with Netflix. Following his success with his lavish musical La La Land, Netflix gave Chazelle series that will be yet another musical titled The Eddy, following the events and gossip that occur in a club in modern-day Paris.
Snatching up a talented filmmaker like Chazelle for an original series is certainly a smart move for Apple: the filmmaker became the youngest-ever winner of the Academy Award for Best Director in 2017 for La La Land, and there’s no doubt his talent will transfer well to the small screen.
