HBO Max has already renewed one of its original series only three weeks after its launch, Deadline has confirmed. Love Life, a romantic comedy series starring Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), will be renewed for a second season – however, its lead actress will not retain her starring role as the series will be an anthology.
The first season of Love Life focused on Kendrick’s character Darby Carter as she navigated her love life and other relationships. By the end of this season, her main story had reached a definitive ending, but this would not compromise the future of the series. As announced by Deadline over a year ago, the series was always meant to be an anthology, with each season of the show taking on a new main character.
Kendrick will not depart the series, despite the change in lead. She also serves as the executive producer for the show – and will return as her character in the upcoming season, but in a reduced role. Speaking on the renewal, Kendrick told Deadline “It’s been a labor of love working with everyone on Love Life and all who helped shaped Darby and brought her story to life. I am excited to be able to collaborate again with the team on a new character and their journey.” The second season will remain in New York, and follow a character who realizes the person they married may not be their actual soul mate.
The series was an unprecedented success for HBO Max, prompting them to release all 10 episodes only three weeks after launch – instead of the original plan to release them on weekly basis. Kendrick is joined by Sam Boyd ( In A Relationship), Bridget Bedard (Ramy), Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), and Dan Magnante (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) as executive producers.
