Fox has renewed the animated comedy The Great North for a second season before the series’ premiere, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show was ordered to straight-to-series last year and is set to debut midseason in 2021.
The Great North is set in Alaska and follows the adventures of the Tobin family as single father Beef, voiced by Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), who attempts to keep his kids together. His daughter Judy, voiced by Jenny Slate (Big Mouth), makes this task difficult with her expressive dreams that lead her away from her family.
Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) is the voice for Judy’s older brother Wolf and Dulcé Sloan (The Daily Show With Trevor Noah) voices his fiancé Honeybee. The voices for other family members include Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) as Honeybee’s middle brother Ham, Aparna Nancherla (Corporate) as Honeybee’s younger brother Moon, Megan Mullally (Bob’s Burgers) as Judy’s boss Allyson, and Alanis Morrisette (Weeds) as Alyson’s imaginary friend.
The show hails from writers and executive producers Wendy Molyneux (Bob’s Burgers), Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (Bob’s Burgers), and Minty Lewis (Regular Show). The trio will be showrunners for The Great North alongside Loren Bouchard (Bob’s Burgers creator). The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television with Bento Box Entertainment as the animation studio.
The network is amping up on animated series for the coming season, as production on most live-action series are suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. Further, the network has been regularly increasing animation projects in the past few years with shows such as Bless The Harts, Duncanville, Housebroken, among others.
Deadline reports President of Fox Entertainment Michael Thorn who says, “Wendy, Lizzie, Minty and Loren delivered a show that embodies our animation brand so strongly, they left us no choice but to give this stellar series an early renewal ahead of its midseason debut. Of course, we’d also like to thank our friends at 20th, who continue to be tremendous partners.”
