‘Animaniacs’ Reboot Renewed for a Third Season at Hulu, Second Season to Release Later in 2021

Hulu’s Animaniacs reboot has been renewed for a third season, before its second season has been released, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series received the most mentions on social media, over its debut weekend in 2020, than any other Hulu Original thus far, according to Deadline.

This sort of early renewal is helpful to animators, according to The Hollywood Reporter, because of the lengthy process of production for animated series. The original 2018 order for the reboot was two seasons.

The series follows the characters Yakko, Wakko and Dot as they “turn the world into their personal playground” alongside Pinky and the Brain, according to Deadline.

Rob Paulsen (Jimmy Neutron) and Jess Harnell (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) voice Yakko and Wakko, respectively, and Tress MacNeille (The Simpsons) voices Dot.

Steven Spielberg (Schindler’s ListE.T.) executive produces alongside Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios President Sam Register, Gabe Swarr and Wellesley Wild, who also serves as showrunner. In addition, Amblin Television Co-Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey serve as executive producers.

This Animaniacs renewal was one of multiple announcements Hulu made at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The other announcements include:

Iron Mike: a limited series about infamous boxer Mike Tyson

Handmaid’s Tale: returning April 28

Shrill: final season releasing May 7

MODOK: an adult animated comedy from Marvel, releasing May 21

Love, Victor: second season, releasing June 11

Hulu and ABC Entertainment President Craig Erwich said Hulu is appealing to everyone with their latest slate of originals.

“With returning seasons of award-winning comedies and dramas, Hulu’s 2021 slate of original series truly has something for everyone,” Erwich said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re incredibly excited to welcome back the stories and characters fans have connected with in The Handmaid’s Tale, Shrill, Animaniacs and Love, Victor, while taking viewers deeper into the character of Mike Tyson in Iron Mike and bringing animated but deeply human characters to life in Marvel’s MODOK.”
