Angus Macfadyen Joins Cast of The CW’s ‘Superman and Lois’ as Jor-El

The CW’s new series Superman and Lois has just cast Angus Macfadyen (Dupont, Equilibrium) as Jor-El, according to ComicBook. Macfadyen is most famously known for his role in Braveheart as Scottish King Robert the Bruce. Fans of Superman have seen various actors take on the role of Jor-El such as Marlon Brando (Jor-El, Superman), Julian Sands (Jor-El, Smallville), and Russel Crowe (Jor-El, Man of Steel). Macfadyen’s role as Jor-El will be true to form, his mentorship will act as a guiding light for Clark (Tyler Hoechlin, Palm Springs) in his mission to defend the innocent and uphold the values of truth and justice.

The character Jor-El was created by comic legends Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. Surprisingly enough, Jor-El didn’t make his first appearance in 1938 in the original Superman comic. Originally, fans were told that a scientist sends Clark to earth, but they weren’t sure who that scientist was. The Kryptonian Jor-EL was originally featured in 1939 on a newspaper strip, he was also simply referred to as Jor-L. This was a call back to Joe Schuster and Jerry Siegel’s original pitch for another version of Jor-L as a crime fighting sleuth who was from the year 3000. After a very short publication history, the name Jor-L was rebranded into the character all Superman fans know and love.

The CW released the official description of Jor-El for Superman and Lois, “Jor-El is Clark Kent’s Kryptonian father. Though he died along with Krypton, his brilliant essence still exists within the arctic Fortress of Solitude to provide guidance when his son seeks help,” according to ComicBook. Fans will be happy to know that Superman and Lois will be expanding on the Arrowverse’s Fortress of Solitude with the addition of Jor-El’s essence, Clark will be spending more time there as well when he requires wise council.

Superman and Lois will be premiering on The CW on Tuesday February 23. DC fans have a lot to look forward to with this new series and its fresh take on a fully established Superman.
