Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino Talk the ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival and the Final Four Words

For anyone who’s keeping track, there’s only 14 days (two weeks!) until Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life drops on Netflix. And since the show returns in just two short weeks, TVLine sat down with the two executive producers and creators of the show, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, to talk about the show and, more importantly, those final four words.

Sherman-Palladino went to great lengths to make sure the elusive final four words you’ve been hearing about for years didn’t get leaked to the press or the general public. She even went as far as never writing them down anywhere. “We never put them down on paper,” Sherman-Palladino said. “If someone has a script with the last four words in there, they’re not the last four words.”

Both Sherman-Palladino and Palladino said that they had to limit some of the tours coming through the Warner Bros. backlot because of a certain way that the famous Stars Hallow town square was set up for filming because they didn’t want anything getting leaked.

As for the final four words and filming the scene, Sherman-Palladino said it felt “special … it was very personal for Lauren (Graham), Alexis (Bledel), Dan and myself. For the four of us, it was very personal.”

For others who worked on the show behind-the-scenes, Sherman-Palladino said it wasn’t as personal for them and they were running around the set worried about other things. She did say, however, that the four of them were “sobbing” before they shot the scene.

There was also a chance that the final four words may not have happened depending on how things shook out in the seventh season finale, which served as the series finale of the show. Sherman-Palladino said that even if they wouldn’t have been able to include her original final four words, they still would have done the four episodes for Netflix.

As for closure, Palladino said they do feel closure but that “it wasn’t a closure we were seeking.” He added that the two of them had been thinking about the journeys of Lorelai and Rory for a long time, “so to be able to have done it was great. It’s like a brand new chapter of Gilmore Girls. It’s its own new thing,” he said.

The husband-and-wife duo also said they really wanted to focus on the fact that it’s nine years later in the lives of the Gilmores and focus on that things are different, with Palladino saying “things are different as soon as the first scene starts.”
