AMC’s ‘Moonhaven’ Canceled Despite Renewal for Season Two

AMC+ has canceled Moonhaven in the  middle of programming write downs, walking back the season two renewal, according to Deadline. The cancellation of Moonhaven is one of the cost cutting measures that AMC Networks has announced earlier this year, including laying off 20% of its U.S. staff, via Deadline.

Moonhaven is a sci-fi series that takes place 100 years in the future on Moonhaven, a utopian community set on a 500 square mile Garden of Eden built on the Moon. The series follows Bella Sway, a lunar cargo pilot and smuggler played by Emma McDonald (The Picture of Dorian Gray, Here We Are), who gets sucked into a conspiracy to gain control of the artificial intelligence responsible for Moonhaven’s miracles and teams with a local detective to stop the forces that want to destroy Earth’s last hope before they are destroyed themselves.

The show’s cancellation has come as a surprise after its strong performance as AMC Networks’ number one most-watched AMC+ exclusive series and most-watched new series in AMC+ history after Dark Winds, according to Deadline. Moonhaven’s executive producer Peter Ocko (The Office, Pushing Daisies) shared his thoughts on the show’s cancellation via Instagram: “My sadness over this decision will go away but I don’t think my confusion ever will. This show was a fantastic experience with wonderful, talented, kind people. I will always be grateful.”

Along with McDonald, the series stars Dominic Monaghan (The Lord of the Rings, Lost), Amara Karan (A Fantastic Fear of Everything, Lucky Man), Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel, Munich), Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike XXL), Kadeem Hardison (White Men Can’t Jump, A Different World), and Yazzmin Newell (The Irregulars, The Last Tree)
