According to The Hollywood Reporter, AMC and AMC+ have officially greenlit the Point Break series. The series is a 991 surfing-and-bank-robbing action thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark, Zero Dark Thirty) and starring Patrick Swayze (Ghost, Road House) and Keanu Reeves (Speed, The Matrix). It is set to be led by Alcon Television Group with AMC Studios and StudioCanal as co-producers. Dave Kalstein (NCIS: Los Angeles, Treadstone) and Christopher C. Rogers (Sugar, AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire) will be co-showrunners on the series
“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” said Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios via The Hollywood Reporter. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the series has been in development at AMC since late last year, and McDermott noted at the company’s upfront in late April that he was “pushing really fast” toward a series pickup.
Kalstein and Rogers said in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter, “Point Break was the movie that rocked our worlds forever. It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. Point Break is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world. We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and StudioCanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the official logline for the series reads as follows: “More than three decades after the events of the original Point Break film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged, and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them.”
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Point Break will air on AMC and stream on AMC+ in the U.S. and Canada, with StudioCanal handling worldwide sales. Production is set to begin in early 2027.
